Viaplay: closure of the streaming platform in Canada & the USA at the end of February 2024

The streaming platform Viaplay will be officially "shut down" in Canada on 28/02 and in the United States on 29/02/2024. It was launched in these territories on 07/03 and 22/02/2023 respectively.

Viaplay initiated a programme to reduce its costs and lay off 25% of its workforce following a poor financial performance, on 20/07/2023. The Swedish audiovisual group also reported a net loss of SEK 693m (€60.8m) for the third quarter of its 2023 financial year.

"We are today announcing a new strategy and plan, which includes, but is not limited to, focusing on our core Nordic, Netherlands and Viaplay Select (selected content from the OTT platform available via different services in selected countries) operations; implementing a new operational model; downsizing, partnering or exiting our other international markets; rightsizing and pricing our product offering in the Nordics; undertaking a major cost reduction programme," declared Jorgen Madsen Lindemann, CEO of Viaplay, in July 2023.
