Italy: the Spanish Telefonica group acquires 11.1% of Mediaset Premium shares for €100 million

The Spanish group Telefonica Telecommunications (through its subsidiary Telefonica de Contenidos) has finalised its acquisition of an 11.1% stake in Mediaset Premium SpA, announced Telefonica and the Italian broadcasting group Mediaset on 13/01/2015. The amount of the transaction should be around €100m, based on an equity value of Mediaset Premium set at €900m.

Mediaset Premium is the subsidiary of group of Silvio Berlusconi, dedicated to pay-TV. Its channels notably include Premium Calcio Premium, which broadcasts the Serie A in Italy until the end of the 2017-18 season. Telefonica will be represented on the Board of Directors of Mediaset Premium by Velo Puig-Durán. The board will also include Franco Ricci, CEO of Mediaset Premium and Marco Giordani, its president.

The opening of the capital of Mediaset Premium to new investors and the upcoming reunification of its pay-TV operations with those of Mediaset Espana come in a context where the rival 21st Century Fox audiovisual group is working on…
