UEFA: "I decided 6 months ago that I'm not planning to run for president in 2027" (A. Ceferin)

"I decided, around six months ago, that I'm not planning to run (for the position of UEFA president) anymore. The reason is that sometimes organsiations need fresh blood, but maybe, because I have been away from my family for seven years now, and I will be away from them for three more until 2027," said Aleksander Ceferin, current president of the European Confederation, during a press conference for the 48^th Ordinary UEFA Congress held at the Maison de la Mutualité (Paris, FRA) on Thursday 08/02/2024.

This surprise announcement came just moments after the majority of UEFA's member associations voted in favour of a reform of the body's statutes, which could have been interpreted as a green light for the Slovenian lawyer to run for another term of office, something that Zvonimir Boban (CRO) in particular denounced when he resigned from his position as chief of football at UEFA on 25/01/2024. Although the number of mandates remains capped at three under the new text, any mandate that began before 01/07/2017 is no longer taken into account in the calculation.
