Germany/DFB: record average revenues of over €13m for 3.Liga (third division) clubs in 2022-23

The 20 clubs in the 3.Liga recorded total revenues of €234.7m in 2022-23, a record average of just over €13m, according to the Deutscher Fussball Bund, which runs the league, in its annual report dedicated to the 2022-23 financial year and published on 08/02/2024.

Total expenditure by German third division teams also reached an unprecedented level of €251.14m, an average of €13.9m per club, including €5.25m on payroll.

In 2022-23, "the average debt per club on the balance sheets of the third division clubs was even slightly lower than in 2019 (-0.4%). The clubs in the top two leagues in Germany reported 17.2% higher debts and around 18.5% lower equity in 2022 than three years previously," explained the German Football Association.

In terms of attendance, the clubs welcomed a total of 3.1 million spectators, for an average of 8,199 fans per match, another new record in the history of the league. This average puts the 3.Liga in 23^rd place among European leagues in terms of attendance in 2022-23, "ahead of several of Europe's top divisions such as Bulgaria, Austria, Norway and Romania"…
