Italy/Lega Serie A: Serie A TIM format with 20 clubs confirmed at the general assembly

The current 20-club format of the Italian top flight, the Serie A TIM, was confirmed by the Lega Serie A general assembly held at the professional league's headquarters in Via Rosellini, Milan (ITA) on 12/02/2024.

16 clubs (80%) voted in favour of maintaining the 20-team format, while four (FC Inter Milan, Juventus FC, AC Milan and AS Roma) supported a reduction to 18 in accordance with a proposal presented a week earlier at a meeting with the FIGC in Rome, according to Italian media.

"At this same general assembly, it was reiterated that it is absolutely necessary to maintain the 'right of agreement' in the federal statutes, as exists in the main European countries," said the Lega Serie A.

This "right of agreement" from which the Leagues benefit is governed by Article 27 of the FIGC Statutes (document available to download), which states that the Federal Council must decide, in agreement with the League concerned, on any changes to the organisation of the championship and, in particular, to the promotion and relegation system.
