Everton: sanction reduced on appeal to a withdrawal of 6 points for violating financial regulations

The Premier League's independent appeals board has reduced the penalty imposed on Everton FC for breaching the Profitability and Sustainability Rules to a withdrawal of 6 points from the 2023-24 table, announced the English League on 26/02/2024.

The club had been fined 10 points with immediate effect on 17/11/2023 and appealed against this decision on 01/12/2023. "Everton FC appealed the sanction imposed against it on nine grounds, each of which related to the sanction rather than the fact of the breach, which the club admitted. Two of those nine grounds were upheld by the appeal committee, leading to a reduction in the sanction," explained the Premier League.

The English League, noting that Everton had breached Article E.49 of its regulations at the end of the 2021-22 season, which limits clubs' financial losses over a period of three financial years to £105m (€119.3m), had announced the launch of proceedings on 24/03/2023. Everton's accumulated losses over the period amounted to £124.5m (€144.3m), according to the independent board.
