Transfers: €75bn in transfer revenue for clubs over the 2014-2023 cycle (CIES Football Observatory)

Clubs around the world recorded €75bn in transfer revenue between 2014 and 2023, according to the CIES Football Observatory's monthly report published on 24/02/2024.

English clubs alone account for €13.8bn in revenue, or 18.4% of the total. They are ahead of Italian clubs (€9.8bn, 13%) and French clubs (€8bn, 10.6%).

Among the 20 countries whose clubs have received the most in transfer fees over the last decade, the proportion of revenue generated by foreign transfers ranges from a low of 37% for England to a high of 97% for Austria. Teams in only three other countries received less money from foreign clubs than from domestic clubs: China (22%), Mexico (44%) and Italy (48%).

Conversely, transfer fees received by French (73.4%), Spanish (69.8%) and German (64.8%) clubs were clearly driven by international moves. The majority of French clubs' revenue from transfers between 2014 and 2023 came from the following countries:
• England: €2.5bn (32%)
• France: €2.1bn (27%)
