FC Barcelona: resignation of Eduard Romeu, vice-president of the economic area

Eduard Romeu, vice-president of the economic area at FC Barcelona (LALIGA EA Sports) since March 2021, has submitted his resignation, announced the club on 14/03/2024. The reason given for Romeu's departure was "due to the position's incompatibility with full-time dedication to his professional work."

"You were the key person in Barça's financial rescue," said club president Joan Laporta to Eduard Romeu during an exchange organised by the club on the same day. Barcelona posted record revenues of €1.259bn (including transfers) during the 2022-23 financial year (from 01/07/2022 to 30/06/2023), up 23.8% on 2021-22 (€1,017m), as well as a net profit of €304m (compared with €98m in 2021-22).

"Qualification for the quarter finals of the Champions League felt like the right time. That was the final stage left to reach and it was something we couldn't control. But we did it and therefore achieved what we had budgeted for and had committed to. My work is done," said Eduard Romeu, who is expected to retain a link with the club through his Foundation.
