With a turnover of €418m for the 2022-23 financial year (from 01/07/2022 to 30/06/2023), Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga) are ranked 12th among the clubs of the European Top 5 leagues in terms of revenue generated (excluding transfers) over the period, Club Atlético de Madrid (LALIGA EA Sports) are in 15th place with €358m, as the two clubs prepare to meet in the first leg of their 2023-24 Champions League quarter-final at the Civitas Metropolitano (Madrid, ESP) on Wednesday 10/04/2024 (kick-off at 21:00 CET). In the same 2022-23 season, however, the Spanish club's wage bill (€245m) was higher than that of their opponents (€236m).

In terms of the sums paid out by UEFA to the clubs taking part in the 2023-24 Champions League, Atlético can already count on €80.7m in guaranteed revenue (excluding the market pool), compared with €73.4m for Borussia Dortmund. This difference can be explained solely by revenue related to UEFA coefficient ranking (€31.8m for the Spanish club, versus €27.3m for the German club).
