Paris 2024: World Athletics to pay a bonus ($50,000) to gold medalists for the first time ever

From the Paris 2024 Olympic Games onwards, World Athletics will be awarding a bonus of $50,000 (€46,000) to Olympic gold medallists in athletics events, announced the body on 10/04/2024. The international body thus becomes the first federation to provide a financial reward to its athletes based on their performances at the Olympic Games.

"A total prize pot of $2.4m (€2.21m) has been ring fenced from the International Olympic Committee’s revenue share allocation, which is received by World Athletics every four years. This will be used to reward athletes who win a gold medal in each of the 48 athletics events in Paris with $50,000," explained the body.

Each individual Olympic champion will therefore receive this $50,000 bonus, while each of the winning relay teams will share it between its athlete members. "The payment of prize money will depend upon the World Athletics ratification process, including athletes undergoing and clearing the usual anti-doping procedures. The format and structure of the LA28 Olympic bonuses will be announced nearer the time."
