EBU: €4.9bn generated & 60,000 jobs supported in 2022 by free-to-air broadcasting of sport in Europe

According to "The Economic Impact of the Sports Activities of Public Service Media" report, presented by the European Broadcasting Union on 19/04/2024, the free-to-air broadcasting of sport by public service media (TV & radio) represented €4.9bn in Europe in 2022.

More specifically:
• nearly €900m from the production and broadcasting of sports content;
• €2.7bn included "goods and services": media rights, cameras, catering and editing services;
• €1.4bn related to "wages paid to EBU Member employees and those in their supply chain."

In total, "almost 60,000 jobs" were supported by the broadcasting of sport on European public service media in 2022. "The study assesses the impact of 188,000 hours of free-to-air sports programming on radio and television from 44 EBU Members in 31 countries. It also includes the engagement of millions of sports fans on websites, apps and social networks. The report also reveals the many cultural and social benefits of free-to-air sports broadcasting," said the EBU.
