Italy: FIGC opposes government plan for an economic & financial control body for clubs

"No to a government body (for the economic and financial supervision of professional sports clubs) rather, we must work together to identify even more rigid principles for national licences," said Gabriele Gravina, president of the FIGC, following a summit meeting convened by Andrea Abodi, the Italian Minister for Sport and Youth in Giorgia Meloni's (extreme right) government on 09/05/2024.

"Appreciating the climate of constructive dialogue in the meeting, we had the opportunity to reiterate our views on Minister Abodi's objective of stability and economic-financial sustainability in professional football, but the problem is not the checks and the idea identified does not solve the problem," said Gravina.

Giorgia Meloni's government's idea of creating a government agency to monitor the budgets of professional sports clubs is causing a serious stir. This "body for the economic and financial supervision of professional sports clubs" would be responsible for monitoring the football budgets of Serie A, Serie B and Serie C clubs.
