Luis Figo, the former Portugal international (127 caps from 1991 to 2006), announced his candidacy for the presidency of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) on 28/01/2015.

"I care about football, so what I'm seeing regarding the image of FIFA -- not only now but in the past years -- I don't like it. If you search FIFA on the internet you see the first word that comes out: scandal -- not positive words. It's that we have to change first and try to improve the image of FIFA. Football deserves much better than this," stated Luis Figo to CNN on 28/01/2015. Luis Figo stated he does have the necessary support of five national federations, a prerequisite to stand for the FIFA presidency.

  • The deadline to file a candidacy is 29/01/2015, four months to the day before the election which will be held during the FIFA Congress in Zurich (SUI) on 29/05/2015.
