Rugby World Cup 2023: €1.8bn in spending for an economic impact of €871m in France

The Rugby World Cup 2023 held in France (in 10 host cities) from 08/09 to 28/10/2023 generated €1.817bn in spending, resulting in a direct impact of €690m, €143m in indirect impact and €38m in induced impact, for a total impact of €871m for the French economy, according to World Rugby, which presented an impact study conducted by the auditing firm EY, on 23/05/2024.

The report assesses three main types of impact: economic, social and environmental. The "net economic impact excludes all French fans' spend and French companies' investments in the tournament. Once taken into account and integrated back in the methodology, Rugby Word Cup 2023's total spend reaches €1.8bn," explained EY, whose study was commissioned by the French French Ministry of Sport and the Olympic Games.

Among the study's key figures:
• The event attracted 425,000 international visitors (72% European), or 41% of the total, who stayed in France for an average of 10 days and spent €170 per day, compared with €80 for French supporters.
