LALIGA: a 90% decline in racist insults on social media during the 2023-24 season

Racist insults uttered during discussions related to LALIGA EA Sports on social networks in Spain fell by 90% during the 2023-24 season, compared with the 2022-23 season, according to LALIGA on 07/06/2024.

This analysis, made possible by "MOOD", which monitors the observation of hate in sport on social media, is based on 21.2 million messages written by nearly five million users. "Of the conversations analysed, hate is prominent in 4.1 million, although it only represents 20% of all the data obtained. Furthermore, racist speech is present in only 1.2% with 248,000 mentions out of the total number. After its analysis, it shows a positive decrease of 45% in hate speech and 90% in racism compared to the second half of last season," explained the Spanish football league.

Despite the decreases recorded, "the primary objective for LALIGA and the clubs remains to maintain this trend by continuing with its awareness-raising initiatives to ensure that football becomes as hate-free as possible," explained the body.
