Paris 2024: carbon footprint 32% higher than forecast by organising committee (The Shift Project)

The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games "will probably not meet their climate target," due in particular to the impact of international fan travel on the event's projected carbon footprint, according to the report "Paris 2024: facing the climate and energy challenge of international travel" published by The Shift Project, a think tank dedicated to the energy transition, on 20/06/2024.

The Shift Project estimates that the actual carbon footprint of the event will exceed the organising committee's forecasts by 32%, with 2.105 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emitted (compared to a forecast of 1.580 million tonnes), while remaining 36% lower than that of the London 2012 Games (3.5 million tonnes). Thus, and despite the impact of international fan travel, "Paris 2024 should be the modern Olympic Games with the lowest carbon impact," said The Shift Project.

"International visitor travel alone is expected to generate around 1.1 million tonnes of CO2e. Adding domestic travel to these emissions, the carbon impact of travel could exceed 1.2 million tonnes of CO2e (CO₂ equivalents, or…
