NFL: a record 28.4 million tweets during the 2015 Super Bowl (+14% compared to 2014)

The 2015 edition of the Super Bowl, which pitted the Seattle Seahawks against the New England Patriots (24-28) at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale (Arizona, USA), on 02/01/2015, generated 28.4 million tweets worldwide during the television broadcast of the game between 18:20 and 22:10 (Eastern Standard Time), announced the social networking and microblogging platform Twitter on 02/02/2015.

This figure represents an increase of 14% compared to the 2014 Super Bowl (24.9 million tweets) and made the 2015 Super Bowl the most tweeted edition in history according to Twitter, which recognises tweets "containing terms related to the game and halftime show [that] were sent during the live telecast." The latter, starring the American singer Katy Perry, registered 284,000 tweets per minute on average (12-minute show).

  • The most tweeted sporting event in history remains the semi-final of the 2014 World Cup, Brazil-Germany (1-7) on 08/07/2014, with 35.6 million tweets generated.
