Ligue 1 TV rights: "A video streaming platform is an essential tool" (F. Pesenti, Sportall)

"Ligue 1: in the burgeoning era of all-streaming, how much longer will right sholders be dependent on funding from traditional media?" asks François Pesenti, president of the supervisory board of the multi-sport streaming platform and OTT service provider Sportall, in an interview with News Tank Football on 22/07/2024.

"The situation in Ligue 1 is symptomatic of the evolution of a sports rights market that will in future have to find new sources of growth beyond the sale of rights to traditional free-to-air and pay-TV players. A number of key trends reinforce the fact that a video streaming platform is essential for all sports rights holders, whatever their size or the stakes involved," said Pesenti.

The OTT sports platform DAZN and the pay-TV group beIN SPORTS France have acquired the rights to broadcast Ligue 1 McDonald's in France for the 2024-2029 cycle. According to L'Équipe, the deal is worth an estimated €500m a year. DAZN will broadcast eight games per matchday (€400m a year), while beIN will show one game each matchday (€100m, top fixture or 2^nd choice every other week)…
