World Athletics: $54.2m in revenue in 2023 including 85% from media & commercial rights

World Athletics posted revenues of $54.198m (€49.1m) for the 2023 financial year (01/01 to 31/12/2023), down 1.3% on the $54.923m (€51.4m) achieved in 2022, according to the body on 01/08/2024.

Revenues from broadcasting rights and sponsorship account for 85.4% of World Athletics' revenues, or $46.275m (€41.9m), down 5% on 2022 ($48.7m, €45.6m). Broadcast rights amount to $14.725m (€13.3m) and commercial rights to $13m (€11.7m). "Viewed broadcast hours reached 1.2 billion, viewed by 600 million people across 231 territories (linear only)," said Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics.

Spending fell by $1.4m to $70.6m (€63.9m). 50.1% of expenditure was devoted to competitions and events ($35.3m, or €32m). Annual losses were therefore $16.7m (€15.2m), compared with $17.3m (€16.2m) in 2022.

In 2024, World Athletics will pay a total of $2.4m (€2.2m) to the Olympic medallists at the Paris 2024 Games, including a $50,000 (€46,285) bonus for each gold medallist. The international body thus becomes the first federation to provide a financial reward to its athletes based on their…
