Africa: death of Issa Hayatou (CAM), CAF president from 1988 to 2017

Cameroon's Issa Hayatou died on 08/08/2024 at the age of 77 in Neuilly-sur-Seine (Hauts-de-Seine, FRA) "following an illness," according to FECAFOOT the same day.

President of the Cameroonian Football Federation between 1986 and 1988 after serving as the body's general secretary from 1974 to 1983, Issa Hayatou then became president of the Confederation of African Football from 1988 to 2017. He even acted as interim FIFA president between October 2015 and February 2016 following Sepp Blatter's suspension.

The native of Garoua (CAM) "served as a FIFA Council member from 1990 to 2017 and a FIFA vice president. He was also an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member from 2001 to 2016, after which he became an IOC honorary member," said FIFA.

"Saddened to hear of the passing of former Issa Hayatou. As a passionate sports fan and IOC member, he dedicated his life to sports administration and on behalf of FIFA, and condolences go to his family, friends, former colleagues and all who knew him.
