Finance: sanction of Leicester relegated to the Championship outside Premier League's jurisdiction

The independent appeal board called upon to rule on the Premier League's power to impose sanctions following the alleged breach of its Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) by Leicester City FC (promoted to the Premier League after the 2023-24 season) has ruled in favour of the club, which believes that the English League's jurisdiction cannot extend to events that took place when the club was no longer part of it, on 03/09/2024. Leicester City were relegated to the Sky Bet Championship at the end of the 2022-23 season.

The English club initiated "two urgent legal proceedings", one against the Premier League and the other against the English Football League (the league in charge of the Sky Bet Championship), in March 2024, to challenge its referral to an independent commission for an alleged breach of PSRs. LCFC was accused of failing to submit audited accounts for the assessment period up to the end of the 2022-23 season.
