TPO: The Spanish and Portuguese Leagues denounce FIFA’s ban to the European Commission

"The Liga de Fútbol Profesional (LFP, the Spanish league) and the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional (LPFP, the Portuguese league) have contacted the European Commission of the Directorate General for Competition to denounce the resolution adopted by FIFA in December to prohibit third party ownership of football players, otherwise known as TPO (Third Party Ownership)," said the Spanish and Portuguese leagues in a joint statement on 09/02/2015.

The Executive Committee of FIFA decided on 19/12/2014 to ban the ownership of players by third parties beginning 01/05/2015, stating: "Existing agreements shall continue to be in place until their contractual expiry. New agreements made between 01/01/2015 and 30/04/2015 will be subject to a time limit (one year maximum)."

"This ban violates the standards of protection of competition in the operation of the Treaty on European Union (TFEU) and fundamental freedoms of establishment, service delivery, labor and capital movements," said the Spanish and Portuguese leagues.
