Spain: electoral process for the RFEF presidency annulled by the Sports Administrative Tribunal

The Spanish Sports Administrative Tribunal (TAD) has annulled the electoral process for the presidency of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), ruling in favour of Miguel Galán, president of Cenafe (Centro Nacional de Entrenadores de Fútbol/National Centre of Football Coaches) on 20/09/2024.

The court has informed the parties concerned of the annulment of the recent call for elections scheduled for Monday 07/10/2024.

María Ángeles García Chaves, vice president, who has been acting as president of the Real Federacion Espanola de Futbol since Pedro Rocha was suspended for two years on 16/07/2024 by the TAD for exceeding his term of office, had called the elections pursuant to article 31.8 of the Federation's statutes.

However, according to the Tribunal, in order to apply article 31.8, the federal assembly would first have had to formally accept the dismissal of president Pedro Rocha. The court considers that the suspension of Pedro Rocha "does not automatically entail his dismissal". This step was not taken and the electoral process was therefore annulled.
