Premiership Rugby: a "loss-making industry" with 7/10 clubs considered insolvent in 2022-23

"In 2022-23, seven of the ten Premiership clubs could be classed as balance sheet insolvent, meaning they were reliant on financial support from their owners, as they were also loss-making businesses," according to the "Rugby Finance Report 2024" published by Leonard Curtis, an independent UK firm specialised in corporate recovery, insolvency and business restructuring, on 26/09/2024.

• No Gallagher Premiership club made a profit in 2022-23. "Gloucester Rugby came closest with a loss of just over £0.5m (€0.58m on 30/06/2023) but all the others posted losses in excess of £1m (€1.15m). Losses were as high as £5.3m (€6.4m, for Saracens)."
• "No Premiership club returned a positive net funds position in 2022-23. All clubs showed significant levels of debt, ranging from £15.6m (Exeter Chiefs) to £60.8m (Bristol Bears)."

Since 2022, three English clubs have experienced financial difficulties forcing them to withdraw from the professional circuit:
