Former Airbus A340 aircraft fuselages are to be used as 'sunshade' panels on the main façade of the south stand at the Stade de la Meinau (Strasbourg, Bas-Rhin), which is currently being renovated and extended, according to the English architecture firm Populous on 21/10/2024.

"A total of 196 panels from these aircraft will be used, each measuring between 6 and 2.5 metres, representing the equivalent of 20 to 25 aircraft. The idea is to cut the fuselage to create a solar shading system, while allowing views of the surrounding park and river from inside the stadium. The project elevates the stadium to the status of a sustainable stadium. It's a world first," explained the firm, referring to the stadium, owned by the Strasbourg Eurometropole and home to RC Strasbourg Alsace (Ligue 1 McDonald's).

The two main thrusts of the work, which began in the summer of 2023 and is due to be completed in the summer of 2026, are the construction of a building behind the stadium's south stand, to which it will then be connected and which it will cover, and the increase in the stadium's capacity to…
