2034 World Cup: 2 US senators call on FIFA not to choose Saudi Arabia's bid

Two US senators, Democrats Ron Wyden (Oregon) and Dick Durbin (Illinois), have sent a letter to FIFA president Gianni Infantino asking him to ensure that the 2034 World Cup is not awarded to Saudi Arabia, according to the Associated Press on 25/11/2024 after having read the letter.

"We urge you to seek out a host country with a record of upholding human rights. Approving Saudi Arabia's bid this December endangers workers, athletes, tourists, and members of the press, and it runs counter to FIFA's own human rights policies," said the two senators.

"FIFA should halt the process to select Saudi Arabia as the host of the 2034 World Cup unless major human rights reforms are announced before a vote of FIFA members," said the NGOs Amnesty International and the Sport & Rights Alliance (SRA) on 11/11/2024.
