France/Piracy of sports broadcasts: a loss of revenue estimated at €290m in 2023 (Arcom)

The loss of revenue from the piracy of sports broadcasts in France is estimated at €290m for 2023, or 15% of the revenue generated by legal sports platforms and broadcasters over that year (€1.9bn), according to Arcom's 2024 report on the fight against piracy, published by the French Audiovisual and Digital Communication Regulatory Authority on 28/11/2024.

Of this loss of revenue, €130m concerns sports clubs in particular, while €70m applies to broadcasters. Arcom also blocked 3,640 "illegal sports domain names" illegally broadcasting sporting competitions between 01/01 and 25/11/2024, compared with a total of 2,086 in 2023. Of these 3,640 blockings, 388 were in response to court injunctions and the remaining 3,252 via notifications from Arcom.

Arcom's anti-piracy measures have protected 15 competitions since their launch on 01/01/2022: The Top 14, the Roland-Garros and Wimbledon Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the WTA circuit, the Formula 1 and MotoGP World Championships, the Paris 2024 Games, the 2022 World Cup, the AFCON, the UEFA Champions League, the Ligue 1 McDonald's, Ligue 2…
