Spain/Piracy: Illegal website ordered to pay €31.6m in damages to the Mediapro group

The Commercial Court of A Coruña (ESP) has ordered the company Puerto 80 Projects, manager of the pirate sports broadcasting website Rojadirecta, to pay Mediapro €31.6m in damages for illegally broadcasting LALIGA EA Sports matches in 2014-15, announced the Spanish audiovisual group on 20/12/2024.

Igor Seoane, director of the company Puerto 80 Projects, has been ordered to pay €15.8m of the total sum. "The compensation was calculated on the basis of the economic consideration that Puerto 80 Projects would have had to pay Mediapro to gain access to the signal. Nearly ten years after the start of the legal proceedings, Mediapro has finally succeeded in demanding the closure of the website in Spain and in obtaining compensation for the infringement of intellectual property rights," explained the group.

"Although access is free for users, Puerto 80 Projects has obtained millions of dollars in revenue from advertising and commissions for redirecting traffic to sports betting sites. Forensic reports from 2022 revealed income in excess of €11m from just one of the company's accounts," added…
