The German National Olympic Committee has chosen the project of the city of Hamburg to be the country's bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, on 16/03/2015. Hamburg received 18 votes against 11 for Berlin.

The decision must be ratified by an extraordinary general meeting of the German National Olympic Committee in Frankfurt on 21/03/2015. A local referendum of the people of Hamburg must also endorse the decision. The candidacy of Hamburg is supported by 64% of the local population, compared to 55% in Berlin, according to a survey commissioned by the German National Olympic Committee which was published on 10/03/2015. A similar referendum rejected Munich's bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

  • Germany has not hosted the Olympic Games since Munich 1972.
  • The country's last two bids for the summer Olympics have failed:
    • Berlin in 2000 (held instead in Sydney, AUS)
    • Leipzig in 2012 (held instead in London, ENG)
