FIFA: the host of the 2026 World Cup will be the first selected by the Congress in 2017

"The Executive Committee decided that the bidding process to host the 2026 World Cup will kick off in 2015, with the appointment of the hosts planned for the FIFA Congress in May 2017," announced FIFA on 20/03/2015.

The Annual Congress will be take place in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) in May 2017.

• The designation of the host country of the World Cup will now be made by a vote of the FIFA Congress, and not by just by the Executive Committee (25 members and two non-voting members), the 63^rd Congress decided in its meeting in Mauritius on 31/05/2013, with 198 votes in favour and two against.
  • The congress is the body that brings together representatives of the 209 member associations.
  • All elections respect the principle of one association, one vote.
• This change in the method of designation, officially noted in 2011, resulted from criticism that followed the awarding on of the 2018 edition to Russia and 2022 to Qatar on 02/12/2010.
