The candidature of the City of Hamburg to host the 2024 or 2028 Summer Olympics was ratified by an extraordinary general meeting of the German National Olympic Committee, in Frankfurt (GER) on 21/03/2015.

Hamburg received 18 votes against 11 for Berlin in a vote of the German National Olympic Committee on 16/03/2015. A local referendum of the people of Hamburg must now endorse the decision. The candidacy of Hamburg is supported by 64% of the local population, compared to 55% in Berlin, according to a survey commissioned by the German National Olympic Committee which was published on 10/03/2015. A similar referendum rejected Munich's bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

  • Germany has not hosted the Olympic Games since Munich 1972.
  • The country's last two bids for the summer Olympics have failed:
    • Berlin in 2000 (held instead in Sydney, AUS)
    • Leipzig in 2012 (held instead in London, ENG)
