MLS: the franchise Minnesota United FC will join the league in 2018

MLS (USA-CAN) will welcome, in 2018, the franchise Minnesota United FC (currently in the NASL, the American soccer second division), which was bought in November 2012 by Bill McGuire, an American doctor who heads the UnitedHealth Group, a network of private medical clinics, announced the league, on 25/03/2015.

"The ownership group’s commitment to soccer and the community, the area’s growing millennial population and the region’s rich tradition of supporting soccer at all levels in Minnesota were key indicators that this was the right market," said Don Garber, the commissioner of MLS, on 25/03/2015. Minnesota United FC, who currently play at the National Sports Center Stadium (8,000 seats) in Blaine (Minnesota, USA), will build a 40,000-seat stadium in Minneapolis.

  • Minnesota United's bid was chosen ahead of another proposed soccer franchise in the same state, owned by the owners of the Minnesota Vikings (NFL) and a further group from Sacramento (California) with the Sacremento Republic franchise (American soccer third division).
