Ticketing: British government intends to cap ticket resale prices

The British Government has announced that it intends to cap the price of tickets (for sporting events and concerts) for resale to a maximum of +30% of their face value, on 10/01/2025. It also intends to "strengthen the responsibility of ticket resale websites and apps", and thus "create new legal obligations so that they are held accountable by Trading Standards and the CMA for the accuracy of the information they provide to fans."

The Government also wants to strengthen the enforcement of consumer laws to enable "stronger fines and a new licensing regime for re-sale platforms to increase enforcement of protections for consumers."

These announcements are part of "a public consultation which sets out a range of measures in the ticket resale market that aim to better protect fans, improve access to live events and support the growth of the UK's world leading live events sector". They form part of the Government's wider "Plan for Change", which is designed to save money for consumers.
