LALIGA: a decline in sexist (-94%) & homophobic (-59%) comments on social media compared to 2023-24

The number of insulting messages related to LALIGA EA Sports and posted on social media during the first half of the 2024-25 season is down compared to the 2023-24 season, announced the Spanish Professional League on 17/01/2025. These include sexist comments (-94%), homophobic comments (-59%), xenophobic comments (-29%) and racist comments (-5%).

These figures have been compiled thanks to the MOOD platform, an observatory of hate in sport on social media developed as part of the "LALIGA VS" project, itself aimed at combating hate speech in football. "More than 11.2 million conversations from over 3 million social network accounts" were analysed by the platform during the first part of the 2024-25 season.

The Spanish League has also developed an index to measure the ratio between positive and negative messages surrounding matches (from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest level of negative discourse). This is 6.2 for the first part of the 2024-25 season, compared with 6.5 for the same period in 2023-24.
