Italy: "€1 of public money invested returns up to €19.70 to the State" (FIGC Integrated Report 2023)

"Football represents a major investment for Italy, with each euro of public contribution returning up to €19.70 to the State coffers, representing an exceptional socio-economic impact (€18.3bn in taxes and charges for professional football over the last 16 years)," said the FIGC, which published its "Integrated Report 2023" at the meeting of the Italian Federatation's federal council in Rome (ITA) on 30/01/2025.

"Football continues to be one of the great passions of Italians, with 34 million people interested (two-thirds of those over 14), as well as an increasingly important business sector: total direct revenues amount to more than €6bn and the tax contribution exceeds €3.3bn. If we add the indirect and induced impact, the impact on Italy's GDP can be estimated at €11.3bn, with almost 130,000 jobs generated and 12 sectors of activity directly involved," added the FIGC in the 13^th edition of this study.

The number of FIGC licence holders in 2022-23 stood at over 1.4 million, having fallen to 840,054 in 2020-21 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
