Sports betting: $147.91bn in bets & $13.7bn in revenue for the sector in the USA in 2024

Sports betting generated record revenues of $13.71bn (€13.1bn) in the United States in 2024, up 24.5% on 2023 ($11bn/€10.5bn), according to the annual report by the American Gaming Association (AGA), the US gambling industry's main lobby group, published on 19/02/2025.

The report is based on data from 38 of the 50 US states that have authorised sports betting (compared with 37 in 2023). Bettors in the states concerned placed $147.91bn (€141.2bn) on bets in 2024, an increase of 23.6% compared with 2023. 95% of registered bets were placed online.

Sports betting has been authorised in the United States since the Supreme Court abolished the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 in May 2018, which prevented the legalisation of paid sports betting in almost the entire United States (except in Nevada, Delaware, Montana and Oregon). An appeal was filed by the State of New Jersey after a federal law enacted in 2014 allowing racetracks and casinos to offer paid sports betting was suspended by the federal court in 2014, a ruling upheld by the US Court of Appeals in 2015…
