FIFA: the first Women's Club World Cup to be held in 2028

After "extensive consultation" with the confederations and key stakeholders, the FIFA Council has decided that the first edition of the FIFA Women's Club World Cup will be held in 2028, announced the international federation on 05/03/2025.

Organised on a quadrennial basis, the competition "will feature a total of 19 clubs. Six clubs representing will take part in the play-in stage. The three winners will advance to the group stage and join 13 other clubs. The group stage will feature four groups of four, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the knockout stage," explained FIFA.

The allocation of places for the inaugural edition is as follows:
• AFC, CAF, Concacaf and CONMEBOL: two direct places and one play-in place each;
• UEFA: five direct places and one play-in place;
• OFC: one play-off place.

This Club World Cup with a 16-team final phase was originally scheduled for 2026, but was eventually postponed by two years due to pressure from clubs, confederations, national leagues and FIFPRO, according to the American media outlet The Athletic. A women's international club…
