Lega Serie A: VAR-related refereeing decisions to be explained to the public during the Coppa Italia

The Lega Serie A will begin experimenting with public address systems for referees in stadiums and on television to explain decisions taken by the central referee when consulting VAR during the semi-finals (01 and 02 then 23 and 24/04) and the final (14/05) of the 2024-25 Coppa Italia Frecciarossa, announced the Italian League on 24/03/2025.

This announcement was made "in agreement with the FIGC and the AIA." It comes less than a month after the IFAB, at its 139^th Annual General Meeting (in Belfast, NIR), decided to allow competitions to authorise public announcements by referees after VAR has been used. These explanations by the referee in Italy will be broadcast live in partnership with the British company Hawk-Eye.

At the same time, the Lega Serie A will broadcast from Matchday 30 of the Serie A Enilive 2024-25 (from 29 to 31/03) "the VARDict signal, i.e. the television graphics transmitted during the VAR check, on the giant screens in the stadiums, thus informing spectators of a VAR consultation in progress."
