Basketball: FIBA & NBA to explore the creation of a new European men's league

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) are jointly studying the possibility of creating a new men's league in Europe, announced the two parties on 27/03/2025. To this end, the two organisations are continuing "discussions that began more than a year ago with prospective investors, teams, arena developers and commercial partners."

This new competition would be made up of 16 teams, including 12 permanent members and four places allocated via "a merit-based pathway to qualification through the European basketball ecosystem," according to FIBA, whose rules would be retained to govern this new league (particularly with regard to the duration of games, set at 40 minutes, compared with 48 in the NBA). It should be noted that the franchises participating in this competition would continue to play in their respective national leagues.
