2030 World Cup: CONMEBOL proposes a 64-team tournament to mark the competition's Centenary

"We are convinced that the centennial celebration (of the World Cup in 2030) will be unique because 100 years are celebrated only once. That is why we are proposing, for the first time, to hold this anniversary with 64 teams, on three continents simultaneously," announced Alejandro Dominguez, president of CONMEBOL, on the occasion of the South American Confederation's 80^th Congress, on 10/04/2025.

This possibility of a 64-team World Cup from 2030 onwards was raised at the FIFA Council meeting on 05/03/2025. For the time being, a 48-team World Cup is planned for the 24^th FIFA World Cup, which Spain, Portugal and Morocco will co-host from 13/06 to 21/07/2030. For the time being, the Centenary celebration of the competition (first held in Uruguay in 1930) only involves staging the first three of the 104 matches in three CONMEBOL countries (Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay) on 08 and 09/06/2030.

Alejandro Domínguez's proposal aims to ensure that "all countries have the opportunity to live the world experience so nobody on the planet is left out of the party."
