Super League: Spanish competition authority opens an investigation, UEFA takes note

"UEFA takes note of the opening of an investigation by the Spanish competition authority, Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC), into the unilateral club commitment declarations voluntarily made by clubs following their withdrawal from the so-called 'Super League' project," announced the European body on 06/06/2025.

"These declarations were approved by UEFA in May 2021 in a spirit of reconciliation. UEFA remains confident that the club commitment declarations are fully compatible with Spanish and EU competition law. UEFA is engaging in a constructive spirit with the CNMC in order to bring this matter to a close," added the confederation.

Spain's National Commission for Markets and Competition has announced that it is investigating UEFA for potential infringements contrary to competition law and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

The opening of this case by the CNMC follows a complaint lodged by A22 Sports Management, the promoter of the European Super League project, in which Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona are involved as the main promoters…
