England: Barclays Women's Super League to expand from 12 to 14 teams from 2026-27

"At a WSL Football shareholders' meeting today, clubs voted to expand the Barclays Women’s Super League to 14 teams from the start of the 2026-27 season," announced the commercial company in charge of organising England's top two women's divisions on 16/06/2025.

The decision, which is still subject to approval by The FA's board of directors, provides for a format in which all teams play each other twice (home and away), automatic promotion for the top team in Barclays Women's Super League 2 and automatic relegation for the 14^th-placed team in Barclays Women's Super League, as well as the introduction of a promotion/relegation play-off between the 13^th-placed team in the top division and the 2^nd-placed team in the second division.

This expansion will be achieved through the automatic promotion of the top two teams in Barclays Women's Super League 2 at the end of the 2025-26 season, while a play-off will be organised between the 12^th and last-placed team in Barclays Women's Super League and the 3^rd-placed team in the second division.
