NBA : Los Angeles Lakers acquired by Mark Walter, chairman of TWG Global, for $10bn

Mark Walter, chairman of the American investment fund TWG Global, has acquired « a majority stake » in the Los Angeles Lakers (NBA) from the family holding company Buss Family Trust, announced both parties on 25/06/2025, confirming reports published by ESPN on 18/06/2025.

The deal is worth a reported $10bn (€8.6bn) and involves a 66 % stake in the franchise, making it « the largest sale of a sports franchise in history, » according to ESPN. Completion of the sale is expected « in the third or fourth quarter of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions including obtaining NBA approval, » said TWG Global.

The Buss family, owners of the California franchise since 1979 (acquired, along with the Inglewood Forum, for $67.5m), would retain a 15 % stake, with Jeanie Buss continuing to manage the franchise as « governor » and to « oversee all team operations on a day-to-day basis for the foreseeable future. »
