Atlético Madrid: high court cancels the urban project to replace the Estadio Vicente Calderón

The TSJM (High Court of Justice of Madrid) has cancelled the urban project designed by the City of Madrid and Club Atlético de Madrid (Liga BBVA) in 2008 as part of the plan to replace the Estadio Vicente Calderón (54,960 seats), according to the Spanish daily El Pais on 24/04/2015.

The court felt that, in accordance with the regional law on land, it is not permitted to construct buildings more than four stories taller than the existing buildings. The project had planned to build two 36-storey buildings and 16 hectares of green spaces at the site of Estadio Vicente Calderón, as well as 2,000 homes at a former factory of the beer company Mahou, which is located near the Vicente Calderón.

Atlético Madrid signed an agreement with the City Council of Madrid to exchange the plot of the Estadio Vicente Calderón for the plot of La Peineta, where the club is currently building a 70,000-seat stadium for €195m.
