Italy: an automatic 25% pay cut for players in the event of relegation (AIC/Lega Serie A agreement)

The Associazione Italiana Calciatori (AIC), the organisation representing professional footballers playing in Italy, has announced the signing of a new collective agreement with the Lega Serie A for an unprecedented five-year period, expiring on 05/08/2025.

Among the new measures adopted is an automatic 25% reduction in a player's salary in the event of his team's relegation to Serie BKT (article 5.2.7.1), without however being able to fall below the minimum salary set out in the text (see below). "A further promotion to the Serie A will result in the initial salary level being reinstated," it also states. Above all, it will be possible to derogate from the rule, since "clauses to the contrary contained in individual contracts shall in any event remain applicable". These various provisions will come into force for contracts signed on or after 02/09/2025.
