Piracy: "Spanish football clubs lose an estimated €600-700m annually due to illegal broadcasts" (LALIGA)

"As the new 2025-26 season kicks off (Matchday 1 from 15 to 19/08/2025), LALIGA is renewing its commitment to combat audiovisual piracy, the biggest threat to the sports and entertainment industry. Spanish football clubs alone lose an estimated €600-700m annually due to illegal broadcasts," declared the Spanish Professional Football League on 11/08/2025.

"The damage goes beyond financial loss. It is estimated that more than 50% of online viruses are linked to pirated content or illegal download platforms, posing a serious threat to fans who access illegal broadcasts through unauthorised sources," said LALIGA.

"We estimate that piracy costs us nearly €400m a year in Spain alone, and nearly €600m a year internationally," said Javier Tebas, president of LALIGA, on 06/03/2019.

"Spain remains one of the top countries in Europe for pirated audiovisual content consumption, especially among younger audiences, according to data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO)," continued LALIGA.
