LALIGA: 1,600 convictions against hospitality venues illegally broadcasting matches in Spain since 2019

"LALIGA announces that it has surpassed 1,600 convictions against HORECA (hotels, restaurants and cafés) establishments that fraudulently and illegally broadcasted national competition matches. With these rulings, Spanish courts reaffirm the criminal nature of audiovisual piracy in hospitality venues, which, according to LALIGA's estimates, cause the national football industry to lose between €600m and €700m annually," stated the Spanish league on 30/09/2025.

LALIGA had reached 1,000 convictions against HORECA establishments in July 2024, while such convictions have been possible since January 2019 as part of the anti-piracy strategy put in place by the league.

In September 2025, the body also launched the "LALIGA Bares" tool, which provides restaurant owners with an anonymous reporting channel to denounce public establishments that illegally broadcast matches. To validate the report, it is necessary to locate the establishment and attach photos via an online form.
