European Parliament: 86.4% of votes in favour of a resolution defending the European sport model

The European Parliament, meeting in plenary session from 06 to 09/10/2025 in Strasbourg (FRA), has adopted a resolution on "the role of European Union policies in shaping the European sport model" on 07/10/2025 (see downloadable document).

This non-binding text, tabled by Polish MEP Bogdan Zdrojewski (EPP, centre right) and initially adopted by the Committee on Culture and Education on 17/07/2025, received 552 votes in favour out of the 639 cast, or 86.4% of the votes (52 votes against, 35 abstentions).

The resolution highlights the importance of financial solidarity and redistribution mechanisms linking professional and amateur sport, the importance of regulations on financial viability, and the need to combat doping and piracy. It also calls on the European Commission to "fulfil its role as the guardian of the Treaties by actively monitoring and addressing threats, at all levels, to the values-based European Sport Model, including breakaway competitions that endanger the overall sports ecosystem."
