FC Union Berlin: stadium extension project temporarily scaled back from 40,500 to 34,500 seats

Berlin's (German) Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing has approved the proposal by 1. FC Union Berlin to temporarily scale back its plans to expand the Stadion An der Alten Försterei (22,012 capacity), with an initial capacity set at 34,500, announced the club on 10/10/2025.

FC Union Berlin's general assembly had approved a project to expand the stadium to a capacity of 40,500, including 32,000 seats, on 03/10/2024. However, the club had to revise its plans due to the impasse it found itself in, along with local authorities, in developing a traffic reorganisation plan around the stadium that would have allowed it to accommodate 40,500 people.

Although the authorities have approved the initial expansion to 34,500 seats and the corresponding new traffic plan, "the common goal of all parties involved remains a future stadium capacity of 40,500 spectators," added the club.

The project is being financed via a €30.9m capital increase in the stadium management company "An der Alten Försterei Stadionbetriebs AG", of which the club is the majority shareholder. 120,000…
