"86% of all permanent venues used at the Olympic Games since Athens 1896, and 94% of those from the 21st century, are still in use today," announced the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 23/10/2025, as an update of a report published in 2022.

The report, entitled "Over 125 years of Olympic venues: post-Games use", now includes the venues of Tokyo 2020 (Summer Games) and Beijing 2022 (Winter Games), and covers a study of 982 venues used during 53 editions of the Olympic Games. The Olympic venues still in use are used for a variety of purposes, both sporting (practice, training, competition) and non-sporting (culture, leisure, entertainment, community or business).

Of the 867 permanent venues surveyed, 124 are not in use (14%), of which 94 "were unbuilt or demolished for a variety of reasons", in particular due to operational or financial difficulties. The 30 remaining sites are "closed or abandoned," according to the IOC.
